Scouting for Food

Do A Good Turn! A Scout is Helpful!

Scouting for Food FAQs

Mission: The South Texas Council is holding its annual Scouting for Food drive to support local food banks and pantries in their mission to serve the needs of the community.

When: October 28th – November 18th

As Scouts, we know how fortunate we are to have a warm meal every night whether around the campfire or at the kitchen table. And we know that not everyone is so lucky.

That’s the genesis of Scouting for Food, the annual food-collection drive where every youth can give back. It’s another reminder to our local communities that Scouts are here, doing good turns.

Scouts BSA Troops, Cub Scout Packs, Venture Crews, Sea Scout Ships, and Explorer Posts traditionally place door hangers or flyers on homes starting the week prior to the pick up date asking the community to place non-perishable food outside of their door for pick-up on the morning of October 28th. The Scouts will start picking up donations as early at 8:00am from the neighborhoods where they have placed flyers.

The donations will go to help local food banks, pantries and agencies in their efforts to feed the hungry. If a monetary donation would like to be made donors can call the council service center at 361-814-4300 ext. 125.

Safe Ways to Collect Food

This year we are doing something different in collecting food for area food banks and pantries and some things will stay the same. There are a number of ways we can do this.

Ask all the families in your unit to bring a sack of food donations to your meetings. Collect the bags and turn in to a local food bank or pantry.

Take up a monetary donation for a food bank or pantry. Each dollar will feed 8 people. This will represent 8 pounds of food.

Your unit could go door to door and ask for food donations while maintaining health and safety protocols. Plan your Scouting for Food drive however you would like, but please take some time to help others, a Scout is helpful!
